Coil Spring Conversion
Coil Spring Conversion
The Coil Spring Conversion, has been around as long as air suspensions have. In-fact they were created to eliminate all the problems associated with troublesome factory air suspension kits. Coil Spring Conversion Kits have saved some motorist thousands of dollars, not to mention all the repair headaches. The term coil spring conversion means to convert any vehicle from any alternative suspension (air bags, leaf springs, etc.) to coil spring suspension. The majority of these conversions are taking place to remove a leaking or malfunctioning air suspension system. Take a look at the pictures below. The picture on the left is an air bag and the picture on the right is a coil spring.

As you can imagine air bags are much more susceptible to automotive wear and tear, as well as wear from the elements. These move up and down and create friction which over time will wear out the air bag. Other airbags have gone bad simply because they have sat for a while. For example I saw a 95 Lincoln Town Car the other day that had sat for years, the owner went to start it, but the rear bags did not come up. After a closer look we found that the rear air bags had dry rotted through. Coil springs on the other had are far more durable. They are made of steal and covered with a rubbery coat, and pretty much never fail or have problems. Is it starting to make sense why coil spring conversions are a popular option?
If you have a vehicle with air suspension problems, post a description of the problem up in the comments section and I will do my best to answer it. I have been in the automotive business for years and have seen many of these problems first hand. You may get lucky and have a quick easy fix, if not coil spring conversions are a low cost and reliable solution. In many cases I recommend getting a coil spring conversion, because I have seen air suspension repairs get costly. Especially when you keep buying air suspension bags, solenoids, compressors, etc trying to figure out whats wrong. If you do decide you want to keep your air suspension system, be sure to troubleshoot it carefully to avoid wasting money on parts you dont need.
